The French club president, Laurent Marti, fueled the retirement rumors with his comments, stating that he would ask his son to stop playing if he were in his position due to the fear of concussions. This led to Midi Olympique reporting that du Preez would be forced to hang up his boots, with Bordeaux already looking for replacements.
However, Springboks head coach Rassie Erasmus provided a different perspective. He revealed that du Preez would not be available for Test selection this year but would be back in the mix in 2027. This statement seemed to contradict the retirement rumors, as Erasmus did not mention any plans for du Preez to retire.
Du Preez himself is optimistic about his future. He has seen improvements in his symptoms over the last few months and is eager to get back on the field. He believes that resting during the pre-season will help him recover and be ready for the upcoming season. He stated, 'I hope to be ready next season... We are off for six, then we start pre-season preparations, and I hope to be ready for the pre-season which starts at the end of July.'
The versatile forward has had a luckless run with the Springboks, missing out on selection due to injuries and illness. He was set to feature in the Springboks' clash with the All Blacks but sustained a significant knee injury. Despite his limited game time this season, du Preez remains on Erasmus' radar, as evidenced by his invitation to the Springboks' virtual alignment camp for overseas-based players.
